Helping Singers Reach Their Next Stage

Testimonials

Studying under Ted Federle allowed me to grow not only as a singer but as a person. Ted constantly challenged me to improve, encouraging me to reach beyond what I thought to be possible. Working together for four years, I was pleased to have improved my vocal diction, resonance, and range, all while enhancing my ability to excel as a performer. My weekly lessons with Ted were constantly the highlight of my week, and I will carry the valuable lessons learned with me throughout my career.

Ted Federle teaches not only the voice but the artist. During my time with him, I gained not only a solid technical foundation which has carried me through my career thus far, but also a mentor to lean on for support at any point. His experiences and artistry as a singer translate into his teaching thus providing more than just technical instruction. We regularly discussed musicality, phrasing, characterization, and overall intention not only for my own interpretation but that of the composers as well. He has continued to support me by coming to performances and always being an ear to listen as I have navigated new repertoire and opportunities as a singer.

I came into Ted Federle's studio quite abruptly when my prior teacher's health declined. I was in the middle of a technique overhaul and the world was in the middle of a pandemic; we had every excuse for a slow start, but instead the problems seemed to melt away with each lesson. Ted didn't (to my knowledge) cure Covid-19, but even through the mask-and-zoom chaos of teaching voice in 2020-21 he was able to guide me to a new, secure technical foundation. He can pivot from fiddling with specific notes in the passaggio to character development in a piece and back -- not just comfortable with both, but acutely aware of how they can help each other. I am also deeply grateful for his facility with a huge repertoire; I brought him everything from obscure Spanish monodrama to Julius Eastman to Stephen Sondheim to Kaija Saariaho and watched him give practical suggestions for each one tied to our technical exercises. If there's an empty place in his studio, take it.

Ted is a great teacher.  He has a deep understanding of the human voice, which he is always working to extend further.  That is of course important.  However, what sets him apart is does that he does not merely replicate his own personal experience of learning how to sing, nor does he simply follow the 'established' path, as described in pedagogy books. Rather, he finds the path the best fits the individual student's tendencies and vocal history. He also accommodates the individual student's personal goals and tastes, be it opera, musical theater, or more popular music. Finally, Ted is adept at teaching both in person and over Zoom - he has a great ear.

Ted Federle has played a significant part in my growth as a young classical singer. He further developed my skills and helped me break bad vocal habits. What I like most about his teaching style is that he emphasizes vocal technique above all else. He knows how important tongue placement, breath control, and posture is to a singer's sound. He will motivate and coach you until you get it right. He truly cares about his students.
